16/3/2008Affordable Homes for Games Site
Councillor Steven Purcell, the leader of Glasgow City Council, will officially open Parkhead Housing Association's £4 million development, Crail Place, in Parkhead on Wednesday, March 19. The new high-quality development consists of 36 flats, six houses and one wheelchair-adapted house.
Parkhead is earmarked as one of the main areas for the site of the 2014 Commonwealth Games and Councillor Purcell said:"I'm delighted to be opening Parkhead Housing Association's new development.
"These new homes are an important addition to the provision of housing in this part of the city, which will be a key focus of activity for the 2014 Commonwealth Games. The East End is being transformed by a massive amount of investment and regeneration, and there's an energy and enthusiasm about Glasgow which means it's a fantastic place to live."
Jim Strang, the Chief Executive of Parkhead Housing Association, said: "I wholeheartedly agree with the leader of the city council's opinion of what's happening in the East End of Glasgow. This particular project is a legacy project for the East End in the years to come and is the first of several similar developments to add to the registered social stock in Parkhead.
"But ultimately, it is about the people of Parkhead and their families and we are all about building safe, secure, affordable homes for the people of Parkhead. The committee of Parkhead Housing Association have spent the last 30 years rebuilding the East End of Glasgow and we’re looking forward to another 30 years of doing the same.
"The whole issue of subsidy for projects like this is the subject of a consultation exercise by the Scottish Government. Parkhead Housing Association believes that the government should look very carefully at this issue as fluctuating subsidy levels may have an adverse affect on delivery of quality homes such as these.
"This issue is dominating discussion at the Chartered Institute of Housing Conference currently being held in Aberdeen."
